Early Warning Detection for GLOFs
Innovative solutions for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in the Hindukush and Sikkim region.
Discover Our ApproachAbout GlofSense
GlofSense specializes in early prediction of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) across 189 lakes in the Hindukush and Sikkim region. Our integrated approach combines sensor technology with machine learning to provide timely alerts and protect vulnerable communities.
Our Integrated Approach
Sensor Technology
Custom PCBs with water level, temperature, flow, tilt, and pressure sensors, powered by hybrid batteries and LORA communication.
Machine Learning
Ensembled CNN model trained on time-series Landsat images (1980-2022) to predict lake size increases with 96% accuracy.
Real-time Alerts
Data transmission to nearest control centers and immediate alerts to residents upon threshold breaches.

Implementation: South Lhonak Glacial Lake
Our system is designed for critical locations like the South Lhonak Glacial Lake in Sikkim:
- PCBs attached to the lower end of the end moraine
- Sensors monitor for threshold breaches
- LORA transmits alert messages to nearest control center (e.g., Disaster alert centre, Pakyong)
- Early warning provides 4-6 days for mitigation efforts
